Discussing the High School Resume with Strathmore High Students

Resume Tips

This month, I had the great pleasure of presenting to a CALM class at Strathmore High about resume writing.

I always look forward to speaking to people about their resume experience, sharing my thoughts on the topic after 10+ years in the resume writing business, and seeing what it’s like out there in the job world for current and future graduates.

Thank you to Ms. Visser and her students for having me, for listening and participating so actively, and for sharing all of your feedback on the following question: “Is this a guest speaker that you would recommend inviting in to speak to other classes? Why or why not?”

Some of the responses:

😃Yes, it was not too long and she covered helpful and very important things. Very good.

😃 Yes, she did an amazing job explaining in great detail each point in writing resumes.

☺️ Yes, her voice was very clear and easy to listen to.

👏 Yes, I learned some helpful tips and any or all information about resumes is helpful.

👌 Yes, I learned some new techniques from her on how to write a proper resume.

👍 Yes, she said she has been doing this for years and clearly knows what she’s talking about.

☺️ Yes, because she is very helpful in relaying the information with getting a job/writing a resume or creating the perfect resume.

✔️ Yes, I would recommend her to other classes because it is very important to have the best resume possible to get a job in the tough economy we are in.

😊 Yes, because she has 10+ years of experience.

😃 Yes, she was full of knowledge and tips for resumes and writing.

😊 Yes, because she sounds like she is good at her job and knows what she is telling us about.

🙂 Yes, it was helpful.

😔 No, at this point in my life I’m not that interested in resumes or getting a job.

Proof you just can’t win ‘em all (especially if they’re 15)!

If you are a teacher looking for a guest presenter on this topic, please get in touch! The Resume Shop is has a 30-45 minute zoom lecture designed for “The High School Resume,” and I’d love to virtually visit your students, too:

As I bought my own mama flowers, the lady wrapping them told me that folks were waiting at the door for them at 7AM. We both laughed and agreed that was a beautiful thing - this day’s urgency to properly love ‘the moms.’ By chance, my mom was in town and we were able to grab brunch before her lovely husband snapped this photo of us, she and I looking as though we could be standing with our teenage selves, our mini me’s. How lucky I feel to mother and be mothered today. #happymothersday

I’m so excited to see you grow further into the woman you will be, Sweetheart 💝 The world is yours for the taking.

The house is stirring with the sounds of young people preparing to hunt Boxing Day sales, the indignant cries of a cat - now indoors - who regrets her choice to have spent the prior evening under the holiday sky, and the soft snores of a granddad asleep on the couch. My husband has brought me coffee in bed, and the remains of a feast will last our family into the next week. Savouring it all, this first Christmas season both of our children have enjoyed as teens. We made it. The wonderful, wild, exhausting, exhilarating, magical merriment-making is over, and peace takes its place ✌️

A decade later, a lot of hard work, and a little luck, and I’m helping emerging writers get their footing in the same way she helped me.

For me, it all started with that first visit: the moment my interest turned into a career. How about you? Set up an appointment to meet: regionalwir@gmail.com

What’s the best that could happen?
